5th Children’s Rights Research Symposium

5th Children’s Rights Research Symposium

Conversations between Children’s Rights and Childhood Studies

August 2017

The Centre for Children’s Rights Studies of the University of Geneva is pleased to organise the 5th edition of the Children’s Rights Research Symposium (CRRS). The event will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 31st of August and the 1st of September 2017.

In line with the four previous symposia (Liverpool 2013, Cork 2014, Antwerp 2015, and Leiden 2016), the event facilitates a space where doctoral researchers and supervisors from different universities and backgrounds (law, education, sociology, anthropology, psychology, history) come together to share and develop research related to children’s rights studies. This 5th edition of the symposium will have as theme:

"Conversations between Children’s Rights and Childhood Studies"

In 1998 Michael Freeman argued that thus far there had been little dialogue between children’s rights and childhood studies. To support his claim he pointed at the journals Childhood and The International Journal of Children’s Rights which, up to then, were hardly overlapping. He furthermore thought it unlikely that the same people would read both journals. A quick look into the catalogues of the journals since then reveals that much has indeed changed. Developments within the two fields of study have made them increasingly interrelated, to the extent that they are often lumped together when referred to, as if, as one author puts it, they are on their way from ‘living apart together’ towards a happy marriage. Are children’s rights and childhood studies indeed conversing? And if so, what have both fields of studies to say to each other? Through a series of plenary conversations and paper presentations, this research symposium wishes to address where and how children’s rights studies have taken on board insights from childhood studies, and vice versa. In particular, we want to explore how individual researchers navigate their ongoing research projects between the rich and diverse histories, concepts, theories and methodologies of both fields.

Call for papers

We cordially invite doctoral researchers working on one or several of the many crossroads between children’s rights and childhood studies to present their ongoing research. The topics and issues proposed should allow for discussions between different perspectives, both theoretical and methodological, and foster opportunities for synergy and interdisciplinary thought.

Deadline for submission is the 14th of May 2017. Applicants will be informed about whether their abstract has been accepted by the end of May.

Doctoral researchers at the very beginning of their research are encouraged to present a poster.

Besides the panel and poster sessions, the symposium will accommodate a full session on methodology and the ‘art of doing a PhD’.

Registration is closed (for information please contact crrs2017@unige.ch)
